Tom Riley talks controversial vigilante plot in new crime thriller Dark Heart
Dark Heart star Tom Riley has discussed the controversial subject matter at the heart of his new crime thriller.
The complicated series follows Riley as the troubled Detective Inspector William “Staffe” Wagstaffe, who is called to investigate the gruesome murder of a man accused of the sexual abuse of his two daughters. Before they can reach a conclusion on the case however, the murderer strikes a second time – and again, the victim is a man accused but not convicted of paedophilia.
Together with his team, DC Josie Chancellor (Anjli Mohindra), DS Dave Pulford (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) and DS Rick Johnson (Tom Brooke), Staffe must stop the vigilante before he or she strikes a third time. But what does all this have to do with the murder of Staffe’s own parents many years before?
Speaking in a press release about the controversial subject matter, Riley said: “Paedophiles are being attacked brutally and what makes this case so interesting is that the morals of it are so murky. You can’t help but feel that justice is being done in some way to people that have committed hideous crimes but it’s not being done within the remit of the law.
“The question is should vigilantism be encouraged or punished? Wagstaffe pursues this case through London, all the while trying not to let the fact he so desperately wants revenge on the people who killed his parents to effect how he approaches a case that is fundamentally about revenge.”
It sounds like a thought-provoking piece of television.
Dark Heart is a new two-hour drama scheduled to shock and surprise viewers on ITV Encore tonight (Wednesday, November 9) at 9pm.
