SPECIAL FEATURE: The Muppets coming to Sky 1
Premiering on Monday October 19th, Sky 1’s new comedy exposes the fuzzy flock as we’ve never seen them before.
After a nearly two-decade absence from primetime, our childhood favourites the Muppets are returning to our screens in a whole new way. For the first time ever, we the people will be given an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the personal lives and relationships of some of Hollywood’s biggest names – not least Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, and The Great Gonzo – as they work to create a brand new talk show, Up Late With Miss Piggy.
The Muppets maintain their family magic
The original Muppet Show was a whole-family affair; scripted entertainment you could watch with the kids, with no swearing, and very little innuendo.
And while Kermit himself promises that the new season will be “sort of an adult Muppet show”, from what we’ve seen in Episode 1 entitled ‘Pig Girls Don’t Cry’, the spirit of the original programme we know and love largely remains; in spite of online detractors such as onemillionmoms.com complaining that the new show is “not suitable for family viewing”.
Meanwhile, this reinvention of The Muppets does take a step away from the most recent Muppets movies, which have seemed to be aimed at a much younger audience, as the mockumentary’s fly-on-the-wall cameras now reveal all there is to know about the romances, breakups, disappointments, wants and desires of this fuzzy crew, whose personalities have stayed the same as when we first met them all those years ago.
Oh, and did we mention the guest stars? Jennifer Lawrence, Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington and Nathan Fillion are among those making appearances throughout the series, alongside a swathe of the hottest musical guests.
In an overwhelming sea of new shows, The Muppets offers a nostalgic retreat back to those magical childhood moments spent in front of the TV. And while initial reviews from across the pond haven’t been glowing, we have a feeling the show will do better in international markets who have been quick to snap up the new show, with over 120 territories having signed up for the first season so far.
So without any further ado, allow us to introduce you to the stars of the show:
