Mariah Carey to guest star on Empire
Mariah Carey is set to guest star in an episode of musical drama Empire.
The five-time Grammy winner will portray a fictional pop legend called Kitty, who is called in to help Jamal (Jussie Smollett) through a creative block. The pair write an explosive new pop track together, but their collaboration must overcome their personal difficulties if they ever plan to unleash it on the world.
The episode will air on Wednesday, October 5 in the US. It will air shortly after on E4 in the UK.
Empire has tried to get Carey in for a cameo since the series began, with Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal on the show, admitting that she was his dream guest star on the show.
Speaking to E! News, Smollett said: “I keep saying, and I hope they can make this happen, because she’s one of Lee’s closest friends, I really want to see Mariah Carey on the show.”
Carey is friends with series co-creator Lee Daniels after working together on Precious and the Butler, so maybe it was only ever a matter of time.
Carey is the latest in a list of impressive musical guest stars scored by Empire, which has also attracted stars like Ludacris, Snoop Dog and Timbaland in its first two seasons.
Taye Diggs, French Montana, Sierra McClain and Birdman are also lined up for guest appearances in season three.
