Hawaii Five-0 and Three Other US Shows So Epic They Brought Them Back
The sixth season of the classic crime drama Hawaii Five-0 hits Sky 1 tonight. The fast-paced, action-filled show features an elite police task force who are specifically recruited to fight crime in Hawaii. True fans will know the show is a remake of the original, which ran from 1968 – 1980 with an incredible 12 seasons; it was the longest-running crime show in the US until Law & Order surpassed it in 2003.
TV Daily looks at Hawaii Five-0 and three more US TV shows that were so good they brought them back.
1. Hawaii Five-O
The theme song alone was good enough to bring back. Composed by Morton Stevens and recorded by the Ventures, it has become the unofficial fight song for the University of Hawaii and even reached the top 5 of the Billboard Chart.Listen to the fantastic tune below and compare the retro to the modern in both shows’ intros. Both contain the obligatory shots of beautiful Hawaiian women, the modern decided to smooth over the quick cuts of the original, making it slightly smoother viewing!
2. Parenthood
The 1989 comedy-drama film stars Steve Martin amongst multiple other famous faces. Directed by Ron Howard, it portrays the ups and downs of family life with a quirky sense of humour. Much of the film is based on actual family experiences of Howard and the writing and production team.Ron Howard himself tried to serialise the film for TV in 1990 but due to poor ratings it was cancelled after one season. Proving that absence makes the heart grow fonder, the series was attempted again in 2010 and proved successful. Parenthood ran for six seasons finishing in January 2015.
Below is a classic clip from the 1989 film demonstrating Steve Martin’s dry humour and of course, the perils of parenthood. (Warning – do not watch after eating)!
3. Beverly Hills, 90210
The glamorous young things of the desirable postcode first aired in 1990. Its 10-year run made household names (and teen idols) of its cast and gathered a huge fan following. Spin-off Melrose Place was incredibly successful as was its remake, 90210, which came back to our screens just eight years after the original finale. Both followed the lives of several wealthy high school teens, dealing with topics like drug abuse, domestic violence, teen pregnancy and gay rights.Reminisce with the old intro and some great 90s fashion.
4. Battlestar Galactica
In the wake of the success of Star Wars, the sci-fi show aired in 1978 and spawned a succession of sequels, book adaptations, comic books and video games. It told of a distant star system where a civilisation of humans lived. In the past the humans created the “Cylons”, a cybernetic race, whose decision to attack humans leaves a population of only 50,000 survivors. One military ship remains, the Battlestar Galactica. It is under the leadership of both Commander Bill Adama and Preisdent Laura Roslin that the ship attempts to lead the fugitives towards a far-away refuge known as “Earth”.
The initial franchise had only one season but was followed by a spin-off Galactica 1980 and then remade in 2003, beginning with a miniseries in 2003 and then following up with a series that ran for four seasons.
The 2004 series was well received, winning countless awards and receiving praise from the likes of The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly.
This sixth season of Hawaii Five-0 takes the show halfway to the epic 12 seasons managed by the original. Long live the sun, sand, sea and crime fighting.
Hawaii Five-0 airs tonight on Sky 1 at (TIME).
