Emmys – The Winners
Well it was the night all TV fans were waiting for, and we weren’t disappointed were we? In a historic awards ceremony in LA last night, the best and brightest from TV gathered together to support the best in the field, with HBO coming out champions, clearing the floor with Game of Thrones and Veep.
The American fantasy drama broke Emmy records last night when it took home 12 awards, including Best Drama at the 67th Annual awards ceremony, while Viola Davis become the first African-American woman to win Best Lead Actress in the award’s history.
The full list of winners include:
Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hamm beat out Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Jeff Daniels (Newsroom), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) to take home the top prize following eight years of snubs. Go Jon!
Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Viola Davis – How to Get Away With Murder.
Making history as the first black woman to win in this category, Davis delivered a killer acceptance speech where she quoted civil rights activist Harriet Tubman saying: “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.” The Help star beat out Claire Danes (Homeland), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and House of Card’s Robin Wright.
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
Jeffrey Tampor – Transparent
The incisive American talent took on quite a few heavy-weights in this category, going up against Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Louis C.K. (Louie), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) and William H. Macy (Shameless) to secure a win for the Amazon show, which amassed a staggering 11 nominations in its first Emmy circuit.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep
Marking another win for HBO, Louis-Dreyfus stood out amongst contenders Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie),
Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie).
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones
The GoT favourite secured a second win for his hilarious and poignant portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in the popular drama, challenging other supporting success stories including: Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul),
Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) and Michael Kelly from House of Cards.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Uzo Aduba – Orange is the new Black.
Yes Crazy Eyes! Aduba also landed her second win last night, bringing Netflix another win for their popular prison drama, beating out two Game of Thrones nominees (Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey respectively) as well as Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) and Christina Hendricks from Mad Men.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
Tony Hale – Veep.
Another win for Veep as Hale stole the show against Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Adam Driver (Girls), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Tituss Burgess from Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
Allison Janney – Mom.
It was ANOTHER Emmy win for Janney last night, bringing her Emmy awards total to a staggering eight, after she landed the prize over Big Bang favourite, Mayim Bialik, Niecy Nash (Getting On), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Kate McKinnon from Saturday Night Live, Gaby Hoffman (Transparent), Jane Krakowski (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Anna Chlumsky (Veep).
Reality-Competition Programme:
The Voice
The popular singing competition between out rival show The X Factor to land an Emmy nomination and beat out other reality favourites, The Amazing Race, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance and Top Chef to win the award.
Variety Talk Series:
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
No surprises here, but we have to admit we’re a little gutted our very own James Corden didn’t land a nomination for The Late Late Show, but maybe next year? In the meantime Jon Stewart can lord over The Colbert Report, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, The Late Show With David Letterman and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for the next year.
Variety Sketch Series:
Inside Amy Schumer
The comedy genius slayed at this years awards, and its no surprise figuring the stella success she’s had this year. I don’t suppose its harmful to have Jennifer Lawrence as your new BFF either but either way we’re thrilled that Schumer got the recognition she deserved, though commiserations to Drunk History, Key & Peele, Portlandia and Saturday Night Live.
Comedy Series:
Veep
Yes HBO! Veep literally stole the show last night with two actor wins and then an overall comedy award, that beat out reigning champs Modern Family in addition to Louie, Parks and Recreation, Silicon Valley, Transparent and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Drama Series:
Game of Thrones
And it’s another win for HBO as Game of Thrones cinches best drama after another stellar season. Admittedly, this was a hard year all round, with GoT facing competition from Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards, Mad Men and Orange Is the New Black, but overall, we’re pretty chuffed with the result.
