Alan Menken and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda to collaborate on live action The Little Mermaid
Academy Award-winning Disney composer Alan Menken and Tony Award-winning writer, composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda are to collaborate on a new live action film adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
The partnership is a dream come true for musical theatre nerds. Menken has eight Oscars for his work on classic Disney animated films The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. Miranda, on the other hand, won 11 Tony Awards for his Broadway hit musical Hamilton, to add to the four he received for In The Heights.
Most recently, Menken wrote the songs for American musical-comedy television series Galavant – which was an unexpected success across the pond. He will also return to score the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film, starring Emma Watson.
Miranda has recently left the Broadway production of Hamilton, in which he played the leading role. He will be starring in the forthcoming Mary Poppins sequel Mary Poppins Returns.
Miranda and Menken will reportedly write the songs for the upcoming reboot together, including a mixture of classic songs from the beloved Disney animated film and new material. Broadway’s Wicked producer Marc Platt is on board to produce the film, alongside Miranda.
Miranda will also play some role in writing the script for the film, although his level of involvement is not yet confirmed.
The Little Mermaid is the latest in a line of classic Disney films getting big budget live action reboots. The Jungle Book was a commercial success when it opened in cinemas in April, while Tarzan received mixed reviews from critics when it was released last month. Also upcoming is the long-awaited reboot of Beauty and the Beast and a film about the fur-loving Cruella of 101 Dalmatians fame, starring Emma Stone.
No director or casting has been revealed yet for The Little Mermaid, so keep an eye on this space.
